Madonna - Papa Don't Preach

Criticism of the song titled papa don't preach by madonna in terms of possitive and negative aspects of pop-culture

Lyrics

Papa don't preach

Song by
Madonna

Papa I know you're
going to be upset

'Cause I was always
your little girl
But you should
know by now
I'm not a baby
You always taught me
right from wrong
I need your help daddy
please be strong
I may be young at heart
But I know
what I'm saying
The one you warned
me all about
The one you said
I could do without
We're in an awful mess
and I don't mean
maybe please
Papa don't preach
I'm in trouble deep
Papa don't preach
I've been losing sleep
But I made up my mind
I'm keeping my baby oh
I'm gonna
keep my baby mmm
He says that
he's going to marry me
We can raise
a little family
Maybe we'll
be all right
It's a sacrifice
But my friends
keep telling me
to give it up
Saying I'm too young
I ought to live it up
What I need right now
is some good advice
please
Papa don't preach
I'm in trouble deep
Papa don't preach
I've been losing sleep
But I made up my mind
I'm keeping my baby oh
I'm gonna
keep my baby mmm oh@

Daddy daddy
if you could only see
Just how good
he's been treating me
You'd give us
your blessing right now
'Cause we are in love
we are in love
so please
Papa don't preach
I'm in trouble deep
Papa don't preach
I've been losing sleep
But I made up my mind
I'm keeping my baby oh
Papa don't preach
I'm in trouble deep
Papa don't preach
I've been losing sleep
Papa don't preach
I'm in trouble deep
Papa don't preach
I've been losing sleep
oh I'm gonna
keep my baby oh
Don't you stop
loving me daddy
I know
I'm keeping my baby

The possitive and negative aspects of the song

The positive aspects are the following;

It allows women now a days to talk directly to their parents even in very sensitive issues like teenage pregnancy. Generally, it is the mother whom pregnant teenagers approach when seeking advice to this “woman issue” it is a girl talk actually; where the mother can empathize and therefore relate completely with her daughter. From here, the mother would serve as the “emissary” or agent who would approach the father in a very restrained way. The song increases awareness about assertiveness – no need for agents or a mother who act on her behalf.

What happened was that the singer approached her father. She accepted that indeed she is the apple of her father’s and so, she thought in a very apologetic manner. She doesn’t want to be a disappointment to her father who had been teaching her the proper values and all the things about her life. She tried pursuit her father’s advice even if she knew that she will be scolded.

Her friends were consulted with regard to her present problem. But she didn’t follow their advice. She knew that a wrong cannot correct a wrong. Facing the consequences would be very hard on her part but she still valued her dignity as a human person. She values life.

The negative aspects about the song were that there is that alarming issue about teenage pregnancy. Teenagers would view pregnancy before marriage as something that can be accepted in society. It paints a beautiful picture about fathers who shouldn’t scold pregnant teenagers but rather support and advice daughters.

Secondly, values learned can be unlearned particularly during teenage years. No matter how parents teach their children about good conduct and values the listeners are promoted to accept reality even if the values learned are not followed to the letter.

Thirdly, it encourages cohabitation commonly called live-in partnership. The problem with this is that sooner or later there is a possibility that it could become a fad among teenagers. And it is now.
